Dr. David C. Ford
Dr. David C. Ford is Associate Professor of Church History at St. Tikhon’s Orthodox Seminary in S. Canaan, Pa. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in History from Colgate University in Hamilton, N.Y.; his Master of Divinity degree from Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Okla.; and his Ph.D. from Drew University in Madison, N.J.
He has published two books, Marriage as a Path to Holiness: Lives of Married Saints (co-authored with his wife Dr. Mary Ford; St. Tikhon’s Seminary Press, 1994) and Women and Men in the Early Church: The Full Views of Saint John Chrysostom (St. Tikhon’s Seminary Press, 1996; a translation in Romanian was published in 2004 by Editura Sophia in Bucharest). He also wrote the booklet entitled Prayer and the Departed Saints in the Conciliar Press series of topical booklets. His journal articles include “St. Macarios of Egypt and John Wesley: Variations on the Theme of Sanctification” in the Greek Orthodox Theological Review, “The Interrelationship of Clergy and Laity within the Family of God according to Saint John Chrysostom” in the St.Vladimir’s Theological Quarterly, “Crisis in Marriage: The Wisdom of St. John Chrysostom” in Alive in Christ and reprinted in Sourozh, “St. John Chrysostom’s Letter to the Italian Women” in the St. Tikhon’s Theological Journal (translation and commentary), and “Three Ordination Sermons Preached by St. Tikhon of Moscow while He Was Head of the Russian Diocese in North America” also in the St. Tikhon’s Theological Journal (co-translated with Alex Maximov).
Dr. David has published encyclopedia articles on “St. John Chrysostom” in The Concise Encyclopedia of Preaching (Westminster/John Knox Press, 1995), “St. Innocent Veniaminov” and “St. Jacob Netsvetov” in The American National Biography (Oxford University Press, 1998), and “History of Orthodoxy” in The HarperCollins Encyclopedia of Religion in Canada. And since the Fall of 2000, he has been serving as co-editor of the one-page articles in the Old Testament section of the new Orthodox Study Bible (scheduled to be published in February, 2008).
His wife, Dr. Mary Sanford Ford, is Associate Professor of New Testament at St. Tikhon’s Seminary. They both have been teaching there since 1989. They have one daughter, Emmelia, who is 13 years old.
